The Liver The liver is one of the largest organs in the body and performs many life-essential functions. It produces a vast number of hormones, enzymes, proteins, and other substances important for your pet's life and well-being. It also detoxifies and removes waste products in the bloodstream by changing them to a form that can be eliminated. This filtering of waste products is important because these toxins can damage the membranes of cells in the liver and other organs. The most important "detoxifier" is glutathione, a potent antioxidant and the liver's first line of defense. Glutathione protects liver cells (called "hepatocytes") from deterioration. The body makes glutathione from S-Adenosylmethionine. S-Adenosylmethionine is formed in the liver from the amino acid methionine, which is found in the diet. When the liver is damaged, production of S-Adenosylmethionine decreases resulting in less glutathione. This in turn compromises liver function. A recent study of 56 dogs and cats with various liver problems reported that over 50% of the dogs and over 75% of the cats had low liver glutathione levels. Denosyl®SD4 When liver function is compromised, the exact cause can often be difficult to determine. Support of the liver, regardless of the cause, is essential if function is to be improved. Denosyl SD4 has been shown to markedly increase glutathione levels in the liver of dogs and cats. Denosyl SD4's activity goes far beyond just increasing glutathione levels. It has been shown to protect liver cells from cell death5 and may be useful in cell repair and healing. Absorption of Denosyl SD4 is decreased when it is given with a meal. For optimal absorption, administer Denosyl SD4 at least one hour before feeding your pet. For owners who find it difficult to administer tablets to their pets, Denosyl SD4 tablet(s) may be disguised in a small bite of food. It is not necessary to withhold water from your pet. In fact, in cats, recent studies have shown that tablets or capsules often become trapped in the throat instead of passing quickly into the stomach. Cat owners should, therefore, gently administer a small amount of water (ask your veterinarian for details) immediately following the tablet to aid swallowing of the tablet. The enteric coating of the tablet should be kept intact to protect the tablet from destruction by stomach acid. This is why tablets should not be broken.
